Twitter not popular with Generation Y & Millennials

According to Nielsen Netview report, Twitter users are most popular among working adults rather than the Generation Y (1978 -1995) & the Millennials (1982 – 2001)

These are interesting Stats below showing that the largest age group is 35-49yr olds which make up over 40% of Twitter users.

“Breakfast Club” Syndrome

You either fall into the “Fad” crowd or “Rebel” crowd. Most young adults would rather be unique and non-conformed as growing up they tend to be rebellious against parents and rules a.k.a the breakfast club syndrome.

Twitter has lately became more Mainstream than ever with the help of popular media shows like The Today Show and even the Presidential Specials, chances are if you have turned on your T.V lately or browsed internet articles you have ran across the term “Twitter”. Seems like everyone is jumping on this bandwagon….except for the young adults.

In the beginning, Twitter was only known to the elite Tech geeks (Age group 16-35) Twitter was underground and Indy. Like most popular underground things, the inevitable is that one day they will become popular. By becoming popular, most young adults tend to stray away from this service mainly because the utter idea of having Mom, Dad or even Grandparents get into this just makes Twitter…”Uncool”.

However, Most middle age adults are hopping on the Tech bandwagon impressively fast. The ever popular Facebook network was just mainly for college students and now Facebook has become so popular with Adults that almost every parent out there has a profile.

I think for the most part, the young bucks out there (I am a Generation Y’r fyi) doesn’t see the “Business” and “mini-blog” core values in Twitter. If they wanted to inform status updates, young bucks were accustomed to Myspace and Facebook platforms. Twitter has taken on a role of a live RSS Feed Link Sharing and Business Networking which are great benefits for most Middle Age adults that may not attract Young Adults over.

Who knows, maybe the young adults will take over soon on Twitter but at this rate with the media and business aspects of Twitter, I wouldn’t count on it. Very interesting stats indeed though. What do you think?

Facebook Adults Vs Myspace Teens

So recently Facebook has surpassed Myspace in unique visitor count with a total of 150 million visitors. It wasn’t too long ago where Myspace was king and Facebook was just a rookie.

There are many reasons and theories how Facebook over took the throne of Myspace. The one thing I think helped contribute a lot to Facebook’s success is the shear fact that Myspace was infested with teens and young adults. Adults and Parents were a little hesitant in joining Myspace but it looked “kiddish” and just didn’t feel right when the main audience is 12-27 years old.

Facebook on the other hand is very clean and started becoming a breeding ground for business minded adults. Soon networking and marketing became mainstream on Facebook and encouraged other adults and parents to follow suite. Now keep in mind, Facebook was originally only for college students who are not quite old but are not quite kids.

This also helped ease the association of a Social Network like Facebook rather than associating with Myspace where it might make you sound creepy for being on that site if your older than 30 years old.

Social Network Comparisons

Categorizing all Facebook users as “Adults” and all Myspace users as “Kids” is of course not true, but majority of the sites are.

However, keep in mind that Facebook has just achieved a new milestone and a lot of users from Myspace are coming over to Facebook because of the hype regardless of being young or old.

Regardless, I still find many stero-types out there in the world and recently I cam across a young girl who was quoted saying “Facebook is the Myspace for old folks and parents” in which I tweeted on Twitter and got some very funny reactions.

———————-

The Reactions

Facebook Adults vs Myspace Teens

Below are some funny quotes caught on Twitter on the views of Myspace and Facebook. I think its funny when the parents talk about how their kids are on Myspace and how happy they are on Facebook, or vice versa.

————————————————-

The Trend

It will be interesting to see if Facebook can keep up with their new members and to see if Myspace can win back the crown this year. I do think Generation Gaps do play a major role with the two Social Networks and Facebook has a major lead with adults conforming over, while Myspace has a strong hold on the Tweens.

Social Media Teens Learning The New Way

Spending time online may be compared to time from watching T.V. Most parents would agree that they do not like their children online.

Based on most recent studies by MacArthur Foundation show that Teens actually pick up great Social and Technical skills.

The studies show there are two categories of teen engagement with Social Media: “Friendship Driven” and “Interest Driven”

Friendship Driven

The concept behind friendship driven results help increase Social Skills of Teens with Social Networks by encouraging current and new friends online.

Interest Driven

The interest Driven concept helps Teens explore vasts information online both new and educational. By leading a free form type of expression, Teens will have access to outside communities normally not within the Teen’s normal realm without Online experience.

Social Media Vision

I can attest to this digital type of learning curve due to many reasons. One is the ease of accessing information on demand by either Google or Wikipedia.

Also by being exposed to tons of different expressions and elements on a daily basis can give your more access to become more knowledagble and give you the chance to explore and learn information on your own.

Most of the time, we are learning without thinking about it, for instance playing games or reading articles that your friends share with you may have high vocabulary words that are used and you learn from assumption.

Next time you may think twice on the idea of “Learning Online”
