Engage & Connect

So now you have all thje major Social Networks in your portfolio…Twitter, Facebook & LinkedIN, now what?

The biggest common mistake out there is when people sign up for Social Media and are not active on there or better yet develop a stasis lock and waits for something to happen. This isn’t dating and in which dating rules apply you have to make sure the time is right before you make the first move.

There is no waiting for the perfect time to make the first move, anytime is a good time to make the first move.

Why Make The First Move?

The worst thing you can do is just have your Social Media profiles just sitting idle, collecting dust. It will be a waste of time and conform to the myth that Social Media is a waste of time.

Be Proactive

Don’t be afraid of rejection or feeling scared to engage people. Quite often or not you will find most of the time that people on Social Media networks are generally receptive and engaging when you first contact them

Contacting people first opens up a Social Engagement and shows the recipient that you are providing value on your Social Media profile and validating that your not some spammer or non-active user. What people hate the most are Spammers and users who just sign up for Social Media profiles but don’t provide value or any updates. It’s like buying a Nintendo Wii because everyone is buying one but just showcasing it to the world without actually opening the box and playing with the system.

How To Maske The First Move?

Facebook / LinkedIN

Join groups that fit your interests and niche – If you like surfing, then search for Surfing groups. Find groups that can benefit you by networking and sharing the same interests. An added bonus when joining groups, you will make new friends and it’s ok to friend request people in the same group as long as you indicate that in your message.

Comment on your friends status updates often – Don’t wait for them to comment on yours, you make the 1st move.

Friend new people – Proactively try to find new people to friend whether it be the ones Facebook suggest, Groups or manually searching. More exposure the better and you can’t go wrong with a large network especially now since Facebook allows you to customize & label your feed stories so it won’t be too much noise in your streams.

Facebook chat – Try often to just Instant Message someone on Facebook just by saying hi, this will open up conversations.

Suggest a friend

Wish Happy Birthdays

Become humble and ask questions – Ask questions often, often we see self indulged narcisstic marketeers that get no respect because they are all about them them them and not enough of letting other people take charge in conversations.

Join Q&A discussion threads – This tactic gets quite often overlooked but it’s so easy to do, especially in LinkedIN. Find Question & Answer boards and actively answer questions or ask questions on here. The point is to engage the community so they can either respect your authoritative responses or help you out and both ultimately providing you with meaningful relationship building.

Twitter

Follow new people – Find Twitter directories like Twellow or Wefollow and again follow your niche and community, by reaching out to follow them first you can start building your follow empire and community. Waiting for people to follow you will be the long and hard route so why not take the proactive approach.

Ask open ended questions – Again often on Twitter people who don’t ask questions arent really engaging correctly and will have a hard time building quality relationships. Try asking open ended questions and see how the responses are and more than likely great conversations will come about.

Engage Twitter comments with full replys Just because you reply does not mean your actively engaging in quality manners. Don’t be lazy and show some decency by replying back with full engaging replys so hopefully you can build quality relationships down the road.

Retweet The art of retweeting is just to acknowledge the influence and authority of your friends on Twitter. They will highly appreciate your Retweet

Follow Fridays It may be a fad but theres a reason behind this madness, its to promote your friends and also become the influencer to your current followers, The more quality people you recommend the more influence you gain.

Recommend Friends Start promoting your friends and recommending ones that you admire, chances are the recipients will greatly appreciate that since you are adding value to them.

So like AT&T’s old slogan used to be “Reach out and touch someone”

This Tweeter is quick-witted, creative and adaptive. They are very enthusiastic in what they tweet and full of energy when tweeting. Often they highly over use exclamation points and “omg”. Being full of energy also comes with being quick quick to anger. This stems from being very impatient but overall they have a good sense of humor and can get along with all their followers.

Just like the Bull this Twitter user is very strong willed and stubborn. It is very hard to convince these Twits with Retweets and Hashtags if they feel like people are driving them to do so. However if the right Tweet and Hashtag shows up as a trusted leader they trust then they will be loyal followers. They are natural born instructors/teachers but can be very self-indulgent so watch out for one sided tweets often with these guys.

Libras are represented by the Scales which portrays balance and diplomacy. This is what Libras are all about. On Twitter they seem to have great intuition, ignoring the fakes and spammers out there and really grasping the real motives of the Twitter users. The downfall of a Libra is that they are very indecisive, Tweeting from one point to another point of view. They are known for having their Tweets their way or not at all. Don’t try to sway these Libras on Twitter through politics or religion for they resent any intrusions that will bend their thoughts.

The ever elusive Aquarius is the hardest to determine their personalities on Twitter as they always change. Along with their ever changing personalities they are very clever and progressive thinkers. The one word that comes to mind when you see Aquarians is “Friendly”. The flip-side to these Tweeters is you might see a rebellious or sarcastic tweet or two. Normally Aquarians have good taste in art and music which makes up for the Graphic Designers and Musicians on Twitter. Along with the artsy side to them comes along the eccentric and conventional tweets but don’t worry this is what makes these guys original!

Twitter users who are Pisces are viewed as the popular Twitts. They are very easy going, good natured, compassionate and not viewed as a threat to some of the dominant zodiac signs on Twitter. They are never egotistical in their tweets and are often viewed as the Twitter’s peoples champs as they are the ideal Twitter friend to have. The downfall to pisces on Twitter is that they are easily led in directions from other tweeters and are often an escapist in their visions. Pisces are a great mystery to unravel as they always have some out of this world ideas tweeting forth.

The Blame Game
Over the years, there has been many articles written about how certain Social Networks were causes for certain events.
Below are a few examples:

Mashable writes about how Facebook Can Get You Fired, Dumped, And Yes, Evicted
Gawker explains how a bank intern gets fired because of Facebook.
Another story of getting fired from Facebook is from Switched, a teen [...]
Post from: Social Media Vision

Don’t Blame Twitter, Myspace or Facebook; Blame Yourself

The Blame Game

Over the years, there has been many articles written about how certain Social Networks were causes for certain events.

Below are a few examples:

Mashable writes about how Facebook Can Get You Fired, Dumped, And Yes, Evicted

Gawker explains how a bank intern gets fired because of Facebook.

Another story of getting fired from Facebook is from Switched, a teen calls job “boring”

Most recently, the famous story about how a would-be cisco employee would of got hired except Twitter got him fired.

Americanshelflife talks about how she got dumped because of Facebook

Now noticed, all the articles have one thing in common and that is doing the blame game. It seems like placing the blame of the bad news on the Social Network is more shocking than comparing it to a normal event without Social Media involved.

It appears with the new hype and phenomenon of Social Media taking place that these stories get hyped due to having the event take place on Social Media. This maybe the case, but they are still all missing the main point and that’s being accountable for their own actions.

Social Media Are Just Communication Tools and Mediums

Twitter, Myspace and Facebook are just Social Networks. They are communication tools that we use on a daily basis. Although these are great sources for communication, they are just that and doesn’t force us to do anything against our will.

If you ever heard the saying….

“Computers don’t make errors, people make errors”

“Guns don’t kill people, people kill people”

These sayings imply that to not blame the tools but to blame the users.

Be Accountable For Your Actions

There is a great movement and book out there if you haven’t heard it, it’s called QBQ – The Question Behind The Question and Personal Accountability.

That’s what this is all about, these users on these Social Networks need to stop blaming Social Media for their actions and take personal accountability for what they did.

It’s not Facebook’s fault that the users got fire for posting incriminating information…..

It’s not Twitters fault for displaying a users Tweet on his careless opinion about his future employer…

It’s not Myspace’s fault that you got dumped……

Let’s look at the cold hard facts. These users are all soley responsible for their actions and just because they have the ability to showcase their information to the world they should have the common sense to be more careful in what they put out there on the net.

Just because you entertained the idea that you will never get caught because it’s Social Media, doesn’t make it right. If you published your hatred opinion in a book instead of Facebook, don’t think you will not fall under the same consequences. Doing something wrong is doing something wrong regardless if you get caught or not.

Bottom line is that Social Media is not to blame….the blame is upon yourself…take personal accountability for your actions and next time make better judgement calls before you go out and do something you will regret.

Great Ideas

The hardest and most effective part of a blog or website is hands down the content. Content comes from great ideas, which of course can come naturally or take a little time to come to.

Brainstorming content while at your desk or workspace may not be always effective at the moment and may come across some amazing ideas later in your day or in an area where you might not have time in writing a blog post at the moment.

Blog Ideas

A way to save some great blog ideas that may occur at a difficult time of day is to just e-mail your blog ideas to an e-mail address you have created dedicated to just storing your blog ideas.

This way you can mobile e-mail your ideas on the fly with your smart phone or even just e-mail ideas when your at work and don’t want to go through the hassle of finding paper and writing on sticky notes that might get lost later in the day.

Its Simple, Clean and Free!

I use this tip and technique personally and it works great! Hope this helps and would love to hear your thoughts!

“Surrounding Yourself With Successful People” should be a familiar saying in the business world of successful entrepreneurs. This goal is built up surrounding yourself with positive energy, wisdom and influences. You learn from the best who are successful and you mimic or reflect that success when you position yourself in with them.

Whether you are trying to learn about Social Media, running your own business and just want to expand your network; Here are 7 strategies to help get you started.

1.) Meetups

Meetup is the world’s largest network of local groups. Meetup makes it easy for anyone to organize a local group or find one of the thousands already meeting up face-to-face. More than 2,000 groups get together in local communities each day, each one with the goal of improving themselves or their communities.

Meetups are a great way to find “LOCAL” successful people in your area. This is a great change of pace of always being in celebrity awe online, now you can meet the true local successful people in your area through Meetups.

Many Twitter users are incorporating Tweetups in which its a meetup for Twitter users.

2.) Join Groups/Associations

This may sound like common sense but people tend to join the wrong groups or don’t even join in the first place.

Join groups that provide value in your niche and show highly updated activities within the groups. If your looking to connect with other Social Media experts, you would want to find groups with active members and are committed in helping other members.

By joining effective groups, you are gaining exposure and wisdom with other successful people in your group. This will allow you to see what the experts are up to and what top new stories are being published right on your social network.

If you don’t know where to begin, start with the top with the most active members.

3.) Friend/Fan

Follow the top experts in your niche on the top social media sites out there. It’s ok if they don’t follow you back or even engage conversations with you personally. The point is to add these experts into your arsenal. This is like a blogroll where people can view which powerhouse experts are associated with you providing you with more authority.

Go ahead and friend the experts on Digg, Myspace, Facebook & LinkedIN and Follow on Twitter. It doesn’t matter if they friend or follow back, the point is that you added them to your knowledge rack and branded yourself with a power presence in your niche or field.

Who would you think has more authority as a Lawyer on Social Media, a user who has just personal friends and family or a user who has the top 50 Lawyers in the US along with personal and family friends?

Perception is key.

4.) Subscribe to RSS Feeds

If you don’t know what a RSS feed is yet, I suggest you do so. A RSS feed will replace your over abundance favorite websites and e-mail subscriptions.

Start subscribing to as many top expert’s sites and blogs out there in your niche. The beautiful thing about RSS readers is that you can add many sites/blogs without sacrificing organization and value.

Get your dose of your updated daily wisdom in your niche with beautiful top stories of experts in your area. Below are sites to help get your started in searching for experts and successful people in your field to follow

http://alltop.com/ – Has great categories to help you find the top expert bloggers in that area.

http://popurls.com/ - Another great Buzz Aggregator

http://blogsearch.google.com/ – Google only uploads links in the blog search that have great value and authority. An excellent place to find niches within the first 10 results.

Find a top successful blogger in your niche find out who’s on his blogroll and follow those people.

5.) Build a comment community

Commenting on other blogs in your niche is not only a good way to build SEO backlinks and Google pagerank but is also a vital role in networking with your niche blogger community.

When you focus on your niche, for example Social Media and you just comment on the top Social Media blogs, you are gaining exposure, authority and building a great presence for new associates and friends that will come out of commenting on blogs.

This can go hand in hand with your RSS reader where you would have all your all star RSS feeds in your niche and just remember to comment as much as you can to start building that presence and surrounding yourself in successful environments.

6.) Chat

Utilize the Chat tools like Instant Messenger, Ustream and Hashtag chats to find and follow some amazing people in your niches.

The most common rule in Social Media is to always have your contact information displayed so you can engage and connect effectively. Displaying your IM screen names on Social Sites can help you connect with some successful players in your field.

A good tip in how to become a Power User on Twitter is to actively engage the top Digg users via instant messenger. IMs are fast and easy access to get advice and start building a great relationship with the top experts.

Another great method is to find Ustreams and like Vidcasts that are going on within your niche. A great way to start is finding when the next big vidcast will begin on Social Networks like Facebook, Myspace or Twitter.

Vidcasts are great because not only you can really kick it up a notch in the engagement level but once again show your presence in building a stronger community with the top experts in your field.

Finally #Hashtag chats are found on Twitter. These chats are formed on Twitter and are engaged on Twitter. Once you determine which #hashtag chat to join, go to the Twitter search page http://search.twitter.com/ and start tracking the #hashtag in the timeline. These are becoming more and more popular because anyone can join the fun at anytime.

7.) Conferences/Shows, Seminars & Barcamps

This is no secret, the most active, enthusiastic and successful people in their niche follow shows, seminar and Barcamps to gain more knowledge and networking exposure. The weakest links will not devote their time to join these events and this is a great avenue to find your successful associations.

Barcamps are community content driven workshops. These organizations are largely formed on the web and exposed mainly in Social Media. This is the underground hype you may not find out on the streets but only in web 2.0.

You don’t have to leave your house to join these events you can join Web conference calls as well. Web conferences are excellent resources for events on the fly and ease of accessibility.

Focus

The secret of success is focusing on goals and visions of success. Surround yourself with successful people to help influence and inspire you on this path of success.

ReTweeting
Lately the Twitter world has been buzzing over the art of ReTweets. Let’s quickly look at the facts on a ReTweet or RT.

ReTweeting

Lately the Twitter world has been buzzing over the art of ReTweets. Let’s quickly look at the facts on a ReTweet or RT.

A ReTweet is based upon the word Tweet. Tweet is slang used in Twitter that means whatever message you post up on Twitter is considered a Tweet. Hence a ReTweet is a Tweet that is re-copied that begins with either a RT or ReTweet. Dan Zarella researched that “RT” is used 4 more times than “Retweet” in his article “Whats in a Retweet?”

Techchrunch wrote a post on how ReTweets are viewed as a proxy for Authority in the Twitter world. This means that the more Retweets you gain from other Twitter users based on the article you have written or have found and submitted to the Twitter world, will prove that you are an Authoritative expert in Twitter. This can be viewed as a very helpful contributor in Twitter, A guru/enthusiast/expert in that field that consistently Tweets & Retweets about the same subject i.e Social Media.

Viral communication. Retweeting is the spread of communication quick, for example when the Twitter phishing scam first appeared, Retweets helped spread awareness across the Twitter community to effectively nip this sucker in the butt before it got too ugly.

Are you a Retweet thief?

Before explaining what a Retweet thief is, I want to point out that a Retweet thief is not a user who legitimately found the article outside of Twitter and on their own. This can be very hard to determine and should be based on the Twitter etiquette or respect, should you follow the code or not is up to you.

The best way to explain why a Retweet thief maybe frowned upon is comparing it to Digg.com. When a user submits an article to Digg they have 1st authority and users on Digg constantly submit new articles to be viewed as the authority figure or respected within the community.

In essence in the Twitter world, when a user submits a Tweet with a shrink url (bit.ly, is.gd, Tinyurl etc) that user got 1st dibbs in becoming an authoritative figure. Regardless of if the article is yours or not, you still in essence was the original Tweet which can actually be tracked with the Twitter Search feature and URL shrink stats (bit.ly has a great Retweet tracker).

Now people may say that it shouldn’t matter if you steal credit for the Tweet aslong as the article gets exposure. This is very true, the article deserves the viral exposure and is the main forefront in ReTweeting but keep in mind there is a 2nd reason in Retweeting.

The 2nd reason in a Retweet is the Social Aspect. The original user who submitted the article should also deserve the credit for putting it out in the Twitter community. This will allow the contributor to gain more of a solid reputation and more people can find to connect with you, which in essence is what Social Media is all about right?

So to give credit or not to give credit….that is the Retweet Thief’s agenda.

Examples

Below are examples of Twitter Retweet Examples based upon an article that I was first to submit about the 18yr old Twitter hacker who got caught.

*Now keep in mind I am not pissed if you ReTweeted and didn’t give me credit because you could of legitimately found the article without seeing it on Twitter first, but do keep in mind karma is a b*tch!*

The Original Post – 1st posted the breaking news story of the Twitter Hacker getting caught

The ReTweets soon follow - This was breaking news. Wired actually got the Twitter hacker to explain in detail how he accomplished the hack.

The combination Retweet - This retweet copies their friends name but still gives the original poster credit.

The shorten URL switch - This retweet changes the shorten URL link with a better preference of the Twitter user but still keeps the original credit to the contributor. I respect this retweet to still keep the credit even with a new URL.

The ReTweet Thieves – Now here is the shorten URL I have used for my original tweet. Due keep in mind if the user used the same url shorten service then it will populate with the same url. Below is just an example that could very well be innocent and decided to submit the same article using the same url shorten service. There has been plenty of times where I have seen though a Tweet gets hijacked because the person would expose themselves because they are stealing the tweet from a friend or a high profile celebrity that you know he would of seen.

(*Educational purposes only examples and I am not calling out anybody, all examples can be perfectly legit)

Again this is just a learning purpose example and not really to place blame. Below is an example of a combination where Beverly stole the “shorten url switch” guy (scroll up) but also didn’t give no credit to anybody.

Zaibatus credits himself even though I highly doubt he was not aware of all the Twitter alerts going off in the Twittersphere. All the social media rockstars have already Tweeted about this and its highly unlikely he has not seen 1 single tweet about it.

(*Again, these are just examples and I am not placing blame to certain individuals used in the examples)

Conclusion - The art of ReTweeting to build relationships and promotes social media while giving the original submitter credit. If you do ReTweet hijack, please be mindful in giving credit to the original submitter.

Your thoughts?

What is a Twitter SeeSaw
A Twitter SeeSaw is when you have a lop-side count of either Following or Followers. This affect tends to happen due to these four stages.

Twitter Rockstar
Twitter Peoples Champ
Twitter Spam Follow
Twitter Snob

Twitter RockStar (+ Followers)

What is a Twitter SeeSaw

A Twitter SeeSaw is when you have a lop-side count of either Following or Followers. This affect tends to happen due to these four stages.

Twitter Rockstar

Twitter Peoples Champ

Twitter Spam Follow

Twitter Snob

Twitter RockStar (+ Followers)

The most known Twitter SeeSaw reason is the Twitter RockStars or the Twitter Celebrities. The most notorious Twitter Celeb right now besides Barack Obama is Kevin Rose; founder of Digg.com.

As you can see Kevin has a high Follower count compared to his Following count. Now I don’t know 100% why Kevin chose not to follow people back but most famous Twitter profiles choose not to follow back due to a high demand of people following them.

Twitter People’s Champ (Balance)

The Twitter People’s Champ is when you have a good balance ratio of Followers and Following. Most famous example of this scenario is Guy kawasaki; Managing Director of Garage Technology Ventures. Guy exemplifies fantastic Twitter Balance and Recriprocation. His ratio is almost a dead even 50/50 ratio with room to spare of not following Spammers. This status shows Follow-back love and openness to interaction.

This Stage is the very best stage to have on Twitter due to the power of connection and engagement of Social Media. This is what Social Media is all about, without interaction then it’s like just reading the news on a website with no social interaction. This stage is highly encouraged to practice and will reap the best rewards. This does not mean follow back everyone who follows you, still weed out the scammers, spammers and fake profiles to maximize effectiveness.

Twitter Spam Follow (+ Following)

The Twitter Spam Follow is a no brainer where they become lopsided in trying to follow as many Twitter accounts as possible in trying to gain a follow back. Twitter had recently put a cap on the follow limit you could have in a short time frame without having a the same number of follow backs; 2,000 is the ceiling limit. Now the Spammer have found a way around this by doing a mass follow, relying on Twitter to notify you by e-mail that you have a new follower, the spammer will then mass remove follow to stay under the 2,000 limit.

Twitter Snob (+ Followers)

The Twitter Snob stage goes hand in hand with the Twitter Rockstar. You may not be a Twitter Rockstar but you may have more Followers than Following. This is due to the reason because you don’t want to clutter your Twitter stream with an overload of Tweets of people you may not know too well so therefore you a become very selective in choosing who to follow so your Twitter stream will always be filled with the Tweets you want to see.

You may not want to clutter your Twitter stream but there are better reason whys to have a great follow back ratio. The main reason is due to the power of utilizing Social Media effectively. Another reason is because you can still have a clean Twitter stream by using great Twitter tools to organize groups where you can focus on the ones you want without sacrificing your Following.

My suggestion would be to use TweetDeck when your on a personal computer and an application like Tiny Twitter for your Mobile connection. Both Applications are very good in organizing your points of focus so that way you can still keep track of your main Followers while still keeping tabs of the Twitter world.

TweetDeck is great because you can create a group where you can follow only the Twitter people you want to follow and organization is key which should solve the problem of the Twitter RockStar and Twitter Snob.
