<p><strong>Facebook</strong> was especially busy, as it also <a href="http://www.allfacebook.com/2010/04/zuckerberg-buys-divvyshot/">acquired &#8220;Divvyshot&#8221;</a>, a program that will allow users to tag photos by event. You can expect to see this application in the upcoming months. Music artist John Forte has already gotten a head start on how this might work, pausing mid-set during his latest tour stop in Boston to <a href="http://twitpic.com/1clt9z">snap a photo</a> for his morning Twitter feed.</p>
<p>More politicians are beginning to find audiences via social media. Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty is <a href="http://www.allfacebook.com/2010/03/govenor-tim-pawlenty-hosts-town-hall-on-facebook/">reaching out</a> to his constituents on Facebook. He follows New Hampshire Governor John Lynch, who did a<a href="http://www.livefreeordiealliance.com/Home/ChatReplay/tabid/121/Default.aspx"> live stream chat</a> courtesy of the <a href="http://www.livefreeordiealliance.com/">Live Free of Die Alliance</a> a few months ago.</p>
<p>But beware, the power of social media is a double-edged sword. Just ask the RNC, as the release of controversial <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/04/02/rncs-filings-reveal-creat_n_523327.html">financial records</a> and <a href="http://www.usnews.com/opinion/blogs/linda-killian/2010/03/31/republican-bondage-club-party-should-cost-steele-his-job.html">activities</a> have been blasted to the public by an army of bloggers, as well as a <a href="http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/03/30/make_it_rain_the_michael_steele_remix/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+tpmcafe-main+%28TPMCafe%29">video mashup</a> of RNC Chairman Michael Steele&#8217;s speeches to Fat Joe&#8217;s music video &#8220;Make It Rain&#8221;.</p>

<p><strong>Social proof</strong>, also known as informational social influence, is a psychological phenomenon that occurs in ambiguous social situations when people are unable to determine the appropriate mode of behavior. <p>So we all know the importance of Social Proof and gaining trust with our visitors, but what are we doing about it? Most of us, NOTHING! Which is pretty crazy in my opinion. Social Media has made it easier than ever for consumers to instantly share information about a product or service. This doesn&#8217;t however help a website owner share rating, review and feedback with it&#8217;s visitors.</p>

<p>There will always be critics, haters and naysayers out there in the real world and online world.</p>
<p>How many times have we heard sayings like:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t care what people are doing or where they are going, don&#8217;t tell the world on Facebook/Twitter&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>The funny thing is mostly the people who do complain about this rant are usually users who have not found a benefit in using Facebook or Twitter and merely have an account just to have one.  They maybe update their account once every 2 weeks and has less than 50 friends.  However there are your emos and haters who just like to bicker and rant on things.</p>
<p>Honestly these people just seem to be bitter in life generally and are grumpy grandpas, if you ask me.</p>
<p>Then there are a few who doesn&#8217;t seem to grasp the benefit in status updates.</p>

<p><strong>The benefits of Status Updates &#8211; Enough with the pointless bashing</strong></p>
<p>Ok so whats the real benefit of an update of:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;I am getting ready for my trip to NYC&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;I just bought a new puppy&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;Just saw the movie G.I Joe&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Close minded people may view these updates..just babble&#8230;.pointless.  I beg to differ.  Matter of fact, the millions of other users who effectively use Facebook &amp; Twitter as an excellent medium for communication and engagement beg to differ as well, here&#8217;s why.</p>
<p><strong>The main point in displaying these updates are to open up conversations and provide the lead for engagement</strong></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-weight: normal;">Its that simple folks.  Most people don&#8217;t realize that this is an excellent way to strike up a conversation and a perfect time to engage so that you are effectively using your Social Network to its full potential.  Why let anything go to waste when your not using it at full potential?  That&#8217;s like buying a Fast Expensive Car that just sits in your garage.</span></strong></p>
<p>Now some people may say that <strong>some updates are too excessive?</strong></p>
<p>Yes I do agree, some people need to learn <a href="http://www.techipedia.com/2008/social-media-etiquette-handbook/" target="_blank">The Ultimate Social Media Etiquette Handbook </a>by Tamar Weinberg, however it goes back to the old saying &#8220;Something is better than nothing&#8221;</p>
<p>Its just like in jr.high when the boys would be afraid to dance with the girls but one boy who may not be the best dancer, dances himself silly in the middle of the gym and magically girls start to dance with him.  While the cool guys were laughing at the silly boy, the silly boy got to dance with the girls.</p>
<p>So stop the bickering, its only making yourself look bitter.  Go out there and Engage!  Communicate!  Do what the Social Networks were created for you to do and that&#8217;s Socialize, no matter how pointless the updates maybe, its just another way to provide communication.</p>

<p>The biggest common mistake out there is when people sign up for Social Media and are not active on there or better yet develop a stasis lock and waits for something to happen.  This isn&#8217;t dating and in which dating rules apply you have to make sure the time is right before you make the first move.</p>
<p>There is no waiting for the perfect time to make the first move, anytime is a good time to make the first move.</p>

<p>The worst thing you can do is just have your Social Media profiles just sitting idle, collecting dust.  It will be a waste of time and conform to the myth that Social Media is a waste of time.</p>

<p>Don&#8217;t be afraid of rejection or feeling scared to engage people.  Quite often or not you will find most of the time that people on Social Media networks are generally receptive and engaging when you first contact them</p>
<p>Contacting people first opens up a Social Engagement and shows the recipient that you are providing value on your Social Media profile and validating that your not some spammer or non-active user.  What people hate the most are Spammers and users who just sign up for Social Media profiles but don&#8217;t provide value or any updates.  It&#8217;s like buying a Nintendo Wii because everyone is buying one but just showcasing it to the world without actually opening the box and playing with the system.</p>

<li><em>Join groups that fit your interests and niche</em> &#8211; If you like surfing, then search for Surfing groups.  Find groups that can benefit you by networking and sharing the same interests.  An added bonus when joining groups, you will make new friends and it&#8217;s ok to friend request people in the same group as long as you indicate that in your message.</li>

<li><em>Comment on your friends status updates ofte</em>n &#8211; Don&#8217;t wait for them to comment on yours, you make the 1st move.</li>

<li><em>Friend new people</em> &#8211; Proactively try to find new people to friend whether it be the ones Facebook suggest, Groups or manually searching.  More exposure the better and you can&#8217;t go wrong with a large network especially now since Facebook allows you to customize &amp; label your feed stories so it won&#8217;t be too much noise in your streams.</li>

<li><em>Facebook chat</em> &#8211; Try often to just Instant Message someone on Facebook just by saying hi, this will open up conversations.</li>

<li><em>Become humble and ask questions</em> &#8211; Ask questions often, often we see self indulged narcisstic marketeers that get no respect because they are all about them them them and not enough of letting other people take charge in conversations.</li>

<li><em>Join Q&amp;A discussion threads</em> &#8211; This tactic gets quite often overlooked but it&#8217;s so easy to do, especially in LinkedIN.  Find Question &amp; Answer boards and actively answer questions or ask questions on here.  The point is to engage the community so they can either respect your authoritative responses or help you out and both ultimately providing you with meaningful relationship building.</li>

<li><em>Follow new people &#8211; </em>Find Twitter directories like Twellow or Wefollow and again follow your niche and community, by reaching out to follow them first you can start building your follow empire and community.  Waiting for people to follow you will be the long and hard route so why not take the proactive approach.</li>

<li><em>Ask open ended questions &#8211; </em>Again often on Twitter people who don&#8217;t ask questions arent really engaging correctly and will have a hard time building quality relationships.  Try asking open ended questions and see how the responses are and more than likely great conversations will come about.</li>

<li><em>Engage Twitter comments with full replys </em>Just because you reply does not mean your actively engaging in quality manners.  Don&#8217;t be lazy and show some decency by replying back with full engaging replys so hopefully you can build quality relationships down the road.</li>

<li><em>Retweet </em>The art of retweeting is just to acknowledge the influence and authority of your friends on Twitter.  They will highly appreciate your Retweet</li>

<li><em>Follow Fridays </em>It may be a fad but theres a reason behind this madness, its to promote your friends and also become the influencer to your current followers,  The more quality people you recommend the more influence you gain.</li>

<li><em>Recommend Friends </em>Start promoting your friends and recommending ones that you admire, chances are the recipients will greatly appreciate that since you are adding value to them.</li>

<p>The growing topic on Twitter and the Blogosphere is how Online Marketers are becoming very bitter with the increase competition in Social Media Marketing.  You may have witnessed statements like &#8220;Everyone is a Social Media Expert&#8221; or &#8220;I hate how everyone thinks they are a Social Media Marketer&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Put Away The Social Media Hatorade</strong></p>
<p>There seems to be a lot of animosity going on lately but the Top Social Media Strategists in the Web 2.0 world doesn&#8217;t seem to care to be affected by this battle.</p>
<p>The truth of the matter is this and its quite simple really.</p>

<p>Remember back then in the DOT.COM boom where supposedly have a Dot.com business will make you MILLIONS &amp; MILLIONS of money for everyone!!!  Well of course we found out the hard way just because we got online does not mean it&#8217;s instant cash.  Keep in mind everyone back then was gunning for a dot.com business, it was a race more or less.  Back then, entrepreneurs were hating on the competition and wanted to be the first to win the race.  However, the race and dot.com business bubbled and simmered down and now everyone is online.</p>
<p>The same concept applies to this day, who cares if everyone is using Social Media Marketing tactics.  Guess what, this is starting to become the normal practice and eventually everyone will use Social Media Marketing tactics in their business.</p>
<p>This is Business 101 folks, instead of being paranoid and bitter about competition.  Embrace competition and find ways to improve yourself and focus on how to be successful rather than pouting and complaining because your Mother is right, &#8220;It won&#8217;t do you any good&#8221;.</p>
<p>So what can we do while the Marketing Revolution shifts and starts conforming the entire world to this new change?  Instead of whining about the competition lets focus on these aspects, shall we:</p>
<ul>
<li>Start building your online presence in full affect to get a head start from your competition who hasn&#8217;t signed up on board with Social Media Marketing yet.  We are at an advantage while most people are afraid to embrace this new change, why not start building a great gap in your head start before your competition wises up and hops on the bandwagon.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>For your current competition who use Social Media Marketing now, constantly learn and read new things on how to improve your current marketing methods,  You can never learn too much.  Also, learn from the best even if it&#8217;s your direct competitor.  Just like Microsoft and the great painters in the world, they steal great ideas, upgrades it, and make it their own.  Sometimes to be successful you have to mirror the best but make it your own.</li>
</ul>
<p>So let&#8217;s all put away the Social Media Hatorade and re-focus our efforts on how to be successful instead of focusing on things we can&#8217;t change.  Social Media Marketing is here to stay and we can either embrace it or be left behind.  Whats your decision?</p>

<p>I often see many large corporate companies out there over analyzing and over stressing marketing methods of Social Media to make it very complicated.  The approach tatic these way too serious companies use makes the the average Joe Schmo feel inferior.</p>
<p>How can you put your trust into something that you are blindly leaping into?  If something is that complicated and that detailed that for a simple marketing strategy in just increasing your presence and bringing in more business is becoming way over your head, then it&#8217;s time to take a step back and re-evaluate things.</p>
<p>What are your goals?</p>
<ul>
<li>Increasing your online presence</li>
<li>Developing your brand and engagement with the online community</li>
<li>Staying Cutting edge</li>
<li>Getting the best Return On Your Investment</li>
<li>Increasing your business</li>
</ul>
<p>You see you can pretty much sum up what you want in 5 bulletin points or less.  To break it down even more, Social Media is all about engagement, building an online presence through a social community that leads to building relationships.</p>

<p>Let&#8217;s think about this for a second, the methods they are offering you and the 300 page essay campaign they are drawing up for you, is it really a Super Secret Method that nobody has?</p>
<p>Are the methods they bring to the table really that complicated that an average business can&#8217;t even fathom of comprehending on what to do next?</p>
<p>The answer is no.  Everyone knows what must be done for their Internet presence and its either 1 or 2 things</p>
<p>1.)  They are afraid to embrace new changes</p>
<p>2.)  They don&#8217;t have the time to do or don&#8217;t want to do Social Media</p>
<p>For example:  We all know how to cut the grass but do we sometimes either pay a local neighbor kid to cut the grass for us even if we are very capable in cutting the grass ourselves?  Of course we do, why because its easier paying the kid to do it than ourselves.</p>
<p>So if you are going to pay for a Social Media Consultant rely on tips &amp; advice where they treat you on the same respect level rather than talkign down to you making you believe you don&#8217;t know squat about trying to even do this on your own.</p>

<p>I wrote a post before on how to do a <a href="http://socialmediavision.com/social-media/twitter-spring-clean-up/" target="_blank">Twitter cleanup</a> by using <a href="http://friendorfollow.com/" target="_blank">FriendorFollow.com</a> to remove all non-followers on Twitter and using Twitter directories like <a href="http://www.twellow.com/" target="_blank">Twellow.com</a> or <a href="http://wefollow.com/" target="_blank">Wefollow.com</a> to find and increase your niche follower count.  The reason for a Twitter clean up is to remove all the non-engaged followers in your Twitter stream (besides celebs and news profiles).</p>
<p>Why follow these users if they don&#8217;t follow you back and provide relevant and engaging conversations?  The 2nd step of a Twitter clean up is to increase your niche and social network of Followers that&#8217;s relevant to you.   The Twitter directories was a way to focus on finding new friends who you can target more effectively than friend  search.</p>
<p><strong>New Twitter Account Management Tool for Maintenance</strong></p>

<p>I recently came across this site and have found this tool to be the All-in-One ultimate resource for account management.  I also found this to more effective and faster than using friendorfollow in which I will explain why here shortly.  To use the site, you must first log in using OAuth (an open protocol to secure access to a website with protected data)</p>

<p>1. <strong>Flush</strong> &#8211; Unfollow who are not following you</p>
<p>2.  <strong>Grow </strong>- Grow network, follow new people</p>
<p>3.  <strong>Reciprocate</strong> &#8211; Follow your followers back</p>
<p><strong>The Flush Button</strong></p>
<p><strong> </strong> The Flush button is used to bring up 50 users (hit &#8220;refresh list&#8221; to bring up more) you are following but are not following you back.  Take advantage of this method by removing all the users in your Twitter stream who provide no engagement or value.</p>
<p>There is however the exception with Celebrities, News and other High Profile accounts that you may follow but don&#8217;t expect them to engage or follow back.  Buzzom does have a great feature for filtering out these users and still pursue the rest.  These features are considering &#8220;locking&#8221;.  You have the &#8220;Follow Lock&#8221; and the &#8220;Unfollow Lock&#8221;.</p>

<li><strong>Locking</strong> &#8211; Locking users will place all the users you checkmark in an area where it won&#8217;t be in your future results anymore.</li>
<li><strong>The Follow Lock</strong> &#8211; All locked users you checkmark while searching for new users to Follow will be placed in the tab.  This is great when searching for new people to Follow on Buzzom, you can filter out all the Spammers, Bots and non-relevant people you don&#8217;t want to follow.  This is not a block feature but simply a filter to not show these users in Buzzom.</li>
<li><strong>The UnFollow Lock</strong> &#8211; Every user you Checkmark to Lock while &#8220;Flushing&#8221; away or finding users who you follow but they don&#8217;t follow back will be placed in the Unfollow Lock tab.  People place here are your typical Celebrities, News Feeders or High profile users who don&#8217;t typically follow people back.  Don&#8217;t worry if your afraid of removing a Twitter user who you like to follow but don&#8217;t mind they follow back, you can &#8220;SAVE&#8221; them or &#8220;LOCK&#8221; them so that way you won&#8217;t remove them from your Follow list.</li>
</ul>

<p>Everything you Lock will be saved for all future uses due to OAuth.  Once you login Buzzom it will save your information for future use.  So Flush away and be sure to &#8220;SAVE&#8221; the users who you want to keep following while &#8220;FLUSHING&#8221; the rest of the users who don&#8217;t follow you back.</p>
<p><strong>The Grow Button</strong></p>
<p>This action provides you the list of people who are likely to follow you back. You can select the people from the list and follow them all at once.  You can also &#8220;LOCK&#8221; users who you do not want to follow and have Buzzom show them in the future searches.</p>
<p>The list is actually relevant to your profile and the users do have a high follow-back ratio.  Just because Buzzom automates the list you can still manually scroll down and un-check mark users you may feel not be worthy in following and adding to your network.</p>

<p>One of the fastest methods I seen to accurately grow your Twitter Network effectively and efficiently.  Other great methods Buzzom provides are:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>People Search </strong>- This search you can target new people to Follow by using keywords to locate in the Bio&#8217;s or Tweets.  This is a great search that I have found to replace the Twitter Directories like Twellow.  For instance I would use Twellow to locate &#8220;Real Estate Agents&#8221; or &#8220;Virginia&#8221; in the categories or search.  Buzzom now takes the search 1 step further by also allowing to switch to keywords in Tweets too.  So in essence this is an all-in-one search in this one stop shop site.</li>
<li><strong>Cross Follow </strong>- This cool feature will allow you to choose which Twitter user you want to show data for either all of his/her Followers or all of his/her users she is following.  In essence you will be comparing your data with thiers and will only show the people not in your network to allow to add to yours.  You can start selecting all the Top profiles in your niche to Cross Follow, it&#8217;s all about surrounding your self with like minded success individuals right?</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>The Reciprocate Button</strong> This action will bring up all the users who are following you that you haven&#8217;t followed back yet.  Now mostly the users you have skipped may be due to spammers or bots but you may occasionally skip a few on accident and this feature is great for finding lost stragglers.  These users who are following you should deserve a follow back if they are not spammers.</p>

<p><strong>Techniques to boost your conversion</strong></p>
<p>You bought a new office, a high-tech laptop, and a spanking new leather chair for your hiney.  On top of all the new things you just bought for your new blog adventure, you also have written the best blog article you have ever written, your blog post is so awesome it just screams to be ReTweeted by <a href="http://twitter.com/Guykawasaki" target="_blank">Guy Kawasaki.</a></p>
<p>The blog post is getting many hits but why aren&#8217;t you converting the new visitors to stay longer, click on your ads or even subscribe to your RSS feed?</p>
<p>Many blog sites out there have trouble converting traffic to loyal visitors, revenue generators and subscribers because of a lack of call to action.</p>
<p>A Call To Action is a simple method to show your readers the next step for your blog like clicking on subscribe, clicking on affiliate links or reading a next post etc etc.  Its the driving force for your readers to click on something you persuade them to.</p>
<p>Below are some simple techniques to use for your Social Media site to incorporate Call to Action</p>
<p><strong>Banner &#8211; </strong>Your banner or header is the easiest and most important Call to Action to incorporate.  A simple change of getting a logo designer to create an attracting header for your Blog or Social Media profile will do wonders and will brand your site to the visitors.  Make sure that your new header is click-able to go back to your homepage and is large enough to be clicked.</p>
<p><strong>Complete Profile &#8211; </strong>As with any social media site out there, make sure you try to have most of your profile complete.  There is no penalty in having too much information filled out for your profile.  Visitors will want to find more information about the Author and if they come to a blank page then the visitor will unlikely return.  On your blog make sure that readers can find a spot to click on to get more information about you somewhere.</p>
<p><strong>Vanity URL &#8211; </strong>Most social network sites will allow you create a unique custom vanity url to link to your profile.  Most recently Facebook just launched vanity urls for your personal page and fan page.  Having a Vanity Url will brand yourself and is much easier to remember/click/drive to your site than a bunch of numbers.  It&#8217;s like remembering your friend&#8217;s car&#8217;s license plate because of the vanity plate, it just makes it easier to direct your reader to your site.</p>
<p><strong>Easy to find links / RSS &#8211; </strong>Easy as pie right? Make sure your links are easy to find, you won&#8217;t believe how many sites out there still have the RSS Subscribe links hidden and the archive links no where to be found.  If anything make sure your subscribe to rss feeder link is visible and on the top portion of your site.</p>
<p><strong>Next Post / Related Posts &#8211; </strong>A nice little plug-in out there is having all your footers in your posts show relevant posts and next post option.  This is a great call to action due to making your readers explore more of your website and thus hopefully capturing them as loyal readers instead of just stopping in to read 1 post.</p>
<p><strong>Motto / Mantra / Theme</strong> &#8211; Whats the point of your site? Whats the main theme of your site? If you don&#8217;t know then what makes you think your readers will.  Somehow incorporate a Tag Line or Theme for your site.  Stick with it to help brand your site and capture new readers.  Most blogs out there are sporadic in just throwing everything at the site and not being unified.  A simple theme like Mashable&#8217;s &#8220;<a href="http://mashable.com/" target="_blank">The Social Media Guide</a>&#8221; works wonders.</p>
<p><strong>Contests &amp; Free Gifts &#8211; </strong>Nothing attracts readers more than free gifts and contest give aways especially if you are just starting out.  I seen some viral contests out there that spiral into a huge snowball effect thus attracting vast amounts of new readers and more than likely capturing new subscribers.  I gave away 2 books on my Financial Blog and my traffic spiked 200% and I received 22 new subscribers that day.</p>
<p><strong>Limited / BETA &#8211; </strong>Most sites out there take advantage of the limited hype or the secret beta club hype that makes people want to come to your site even more because of the illusion of exclusiveness.  Remember when Brightkite and Gmail were invite only, this made users go crazy in trying to get invites to these sites and thus hyping up the exposure.  A great simple method is ping your social network sites saying something in the lines of &#8220;Created a brand new blog, click here to get a secret beta preview before it goes live&#8221; see how that works?</p>
<p><strong>6 Second Window</strong> &#8211; They have a saying for most websites out there that new readers will only take 6 seconds to browse your site and if not interested they will move in.  This is very important to have all you key call to action methods in place.  If you can&#8217;t find anything to keep you staying longer on your site then you need to reevaluate your site to include better call to action items.</p>
<p><strong>Location</strong> &#8211; Finally make sure that all social media links are filled in everywhere this includes Myspace, Facebook, Friendfeed, Mybloglog and Twitter.  Simply by adding your link to all your online profiles out there will get you more exposure and allows you to connect with your readers more successfully.</p>
<p>There is no secret method here as you can see most of these methods are common sense but still most people fail to incorporate a call to action.</p>

<p>These past 2 weeks have been crazy with the crisis over in Iran regarding a revolting Election.  Mashable has written a great timeline of events if you need to get caught up with all the Social Media hoopla regarding the Iran Crisis <a href="http://mashable.com/2009/06/21/iran-election-timeline/" target="_blank">here</a>.</p>
<p>A movement has been recently made to show support for the protesters in regards to the Iran Crisis, the movement is wearing or showing the color green for the democracy of Iran.  Many Athletes, Celebs and Social Media sites are incorporating this movement and is rapidly growing.</p>
<p>Below are 2 simple ways to make your Social Media icon turn green or showcase a green ribbon.</p>
<p>1.)  Go to <a href="http://helpiranelection.com/">http://helpiranelection.com/</a> this site will overlay your Twitter picture with a green overlay or a green ribbon.  You have to supply your username and password to do so but its real simple to get it done.  However if you are uneasy in giving out your password and username on this site you may want to try the other option (The site uses OAuth like many other sites that require login information)</p>

<p>I like doing the picnik option because mainly I have always been a fan of the create on the fly site and because I like the flexibility of creating the avatar effects so you can use your avatar not only on Twitter but show support in all your Social Media Exposure like Facebook or AIM.</p>
